It’s a Love Hate Relationship

I notice, depending on my mood that day, I have two reactions to Facebook when I log in.  I have kids, so I log in at night, and I’m either exhausted, or feeling relaxed and relieved I’ve conquered the day. If I’m feeling good, I enjoy my Facebook browse.  Aww, look at how nice their remodeled house looks.  How nice.  Oh look, really?  She’s getting married and going to Hawaii for her honeymoon?  How fun!  It’s like browsing through one of my favorite magazines.

If I’m feeling bad, on the other hand, disenchanted by how much work adulthood entails, I dread my Facebook browsing.  The address bar on my Google chrome tempts me.  Well I have to log in and see what’s going on.  I can’t live under a rock after all.  Ok, fine.  Here we go….  Really?  Another picture of the new granite counter tops?  Oh, she’s going to Hawaii huh?  Humph, my vacation this year was cleaning out my garage for a week.

Facebook, and social media in general, is a funny thing.  To sit there and be bombarded with information about other people’s lives and interests evokes both positive and negative emotions.  Yet I can’t get away.  No matter how hard I try.  I just have to log in and see what’s going on.  So if you can’t beat them, join them.  Learn to be happy for people, and take interest in their lives and what they are doing.  Give a thumbs up to your friend’s posts, and be happy for the friend that has great granite countertops.

And when you post to social media websites, be cognizant of the ones feeling both good and bad.  Share your optimism, and be proud, but don’t gloat.  Maybe talk about a bad day or two, or products or articles that helped and inspired you to improve your life, professional and personal.  Liking social media is the key to its liking you back.  Use it wisely and be sensitive of who your audience is, and think about, “Hmm, if I were reading this web page today, what would I want to see? “

Great message to read today on Fouth of July as Facebook will be on FIRE with everyone being off and sharing pics and stories and melodrama. You have a great one. I am sharing this on my blog as well.
